ROMANIA: Transylvanian One Cluj Initiative to fight COVID-19 pandemic
In Romania, the main organisers of Transylvanian festivals and economic stakeholders as well as some public institutions, have created a joint endeavour, to access funding, logistic expertise, production, local and international connections to cover the needs for equipment, hygiene, social support and information of the hospitals and social carers during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Un Singur Cluj (One Cluj) is a platform that unites more than 100 entities which have been working together since late March 2020. Since then, the One Cluj platform has collected over EUR 191,538 through crowdfunding and sponsorship. The majority of the collection will go towards covering hospital's needs such as medical protection equipment, ventilators, patients' triage facilities, etc. SMEs of the region have made donations of around EUR 145.000 (some of it in kind). As the donations keep growing daily, around EUR 46,500 came from the 'Solidarity Tickets' that can be bought by the festival crowds who will not be able to participate in this year's events due to the social distancing measures. Thus, the organisers have been asking the public to buy these tickets that work as donations for the health care system. As a result of the generous offerings of the citizens, 1,388,300 pieces of medical equipment have been purchased from Shanghai, using the logistics expertise of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Transylvania. The shipment was delivered via air, to Cluj-Napoca airport, in a special flight organised with the Romanian state flight company.
Hospitals in Cluj-Napoca are receiving patients from the entire Transylvanian region. Thus, their role in the fight with COVID-19 has a national impact. The team of One Cluj works closely with all the hospitals from the region to monitor each week the needs of medical supplies. Apart from the hospitals, hygiene products, and protective equipment have been delivered to the family doctors of the region because they are the first in line as health care providers for the population. Also, there are strong connections with the civic support groups that have been active in the region since the pandemic broke out.
As promoters of sectorial and trans-sectorial collaboration for many years, Transylvanian clusters are proud to witness the success of Un Singur Cluj and to be part of it, since many of the entities joined in Un Singur Cluj are members of Transylvanian clusters and some of the clusters themselves are part of this platform.
