This paper explores universities' capacity to contribute to the process of regional development, by looking at the role of Universities within the RIS3CAT Communities, and the role of HEIs.

The presentation presents a method for cluster mapping. It explains the link between clusters and the data available at European level to boost competitiveness and to better inform policy making.

The article provides an analytical approach to cluster mapping, to be used also by policymakers to better inform their decisions.

The three papers encompassing this PhD thesis cover the following topics: literature review on the impact of network cluster structure on cluster innovation and growth; impact of group dynamics on innovation; impact of knowledge transfer.
