European Alliance Against Coronavirus discuss the EU Single Market Programme
On 1 June, the European Alliance Against Coronavirus welcomed Ilse van Rompuy from the European Commission’s DG GROW who introduced the European Single Market Programme (SMP).
It is the first-ever programme to boost the Single Market with a budget of €4.2 billion for 2021-2027.
The SMP is designed to improve synergies and to avoid overlaps of European programmes. It integrates various funding programmes and activities into one and focusses on the economic recovery of the 14 industrial ecosystems.
Its pillars are:
- Making the Internal Market more effective
- Competitiveness and sustainability of SMEs
- Ensuring the effective functioning of the internal market through standardisation
- Promoting the interests of consumers and ensuring high consumer protection and product safety
- High level of health and safety for humans, animals and plant throughout the food chain
- Producing and communicating high-quality statistics on Europe
The second pillar is of particular interest for clusters. It contains the new Joint Cluster Initiative and the Enterprise Europe Network. The activities under this pillar seek to give support to businesses, in particular SMEs, to facilitate access to markets, to create a favourable business environment, to facilitate the development and growth of businesses, and to increase the competitiveness and sustainability of enterprises and whole sectors of the economy through connecting ecosystems and clusters.
Marek Przeor from DG GROW gave more details about the Euroclusters initiative, which will be launched to increase the resilience of the single market, to build capacities and to reinforce the transformation into a greener and more digital economy.
