Description

Every year, millions of tonnes of food are wasted, with almost 59 million tonnes of food wasted in the EU alone in 20201. To help tackle this problem and reduce the environmental footprint of our food supply chain, a group of non-profit waste prevention organisations, food companies, public institutions and logistics providers, including Lineage LogisticsFoodvalley NLInstockVU AmsterdamTaste Before You WasteThe Waste Transformers and Van Geloven (part of McCain) have come together to launch a hackathon. The aim is to raise awareness of food waste in Europe and discover new and innovative ideas using today’s technology.

The hackathon, entitled “Tackling Food Waste for a Sustainable Future”, will take place in Amsterdam on 20 and 21 September. It aims to bring together a wide range of innovators, specialists and start-ups who are passionate about finding solutions to tackle food waste. Through collaboration and rapid problem solving, participants will have the opportunity to make an immediate impact during the 24-hour hackathon. They will present their solutions to a panel of industry experts, opening the doors to future development and implementation.

“The hackathon promises to be an engaging gathering of passionate individuals determined to make a difference. A third of the world’s food is wasted, which needs the attention it deserves. At Foodvalley, we work with organisations that recognise the urgency, but struggle to take action. We help these companies to innovate alongside others to make an impact. I’m curious about the solutions that can turn ‘waste’ into food (upcycling) and whether we can incorporate them into our approach”
Marjolein Brasz, CEO of Foodvalley NL
